Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, just outside the gates of Greyfriars Kirkyard, stands a statue that draws travelers from around the globe—not for its grandeur, but for the story behind it. Meet Greyfriars Bobby, the little Skye Terrier who captured the hearts of an entire city.

The story of this beloved dog begins in the 1850s when Bobby was adopted by John Gray, a night watchman for the Edinburgh City police. For several years, the owner and his best friend were inseparable as they patrolled the city together. However, sadly John died of tuberculosis in 1858, he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Bobby was clearly devastated and mourned John for the rest of his life.

For 14 years following John's death, Bobby reportedly kept a constant vigil at his master's grave. At first he was chased away by groundskeepers yet, he would return time and time again. The townspeople grew fond of Bobby and would bring him food and then eventually built him a shelter near the grave of Mr. Gray.

His unwavering loyalty inspired many and in 1867, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh paid for Bobby's dog license, making him the city's official pet.

Visiting Greyfriars Bobby Today

Whether you're a dog lover, history buff, or simply enchanted by local legends, a visit to Greyfriars Bobby is a must when in Edinburgh

Where to Find Him:

The Greyfriars Bobby statue stands just outside Greyfriars Kirkyard at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row. It’s hard to miss the small bronze figure atop a drinking fountain (originally for humans and dogs alike!).

Travel Tip: Touching Bobby’s nose for luck has become a tourist tradition, but locals discourage it as it wears down the statue. Snap a photo—just don’t rub the nose! When we were visiting, there was a line of people waiting to take a picture touching his nose, so unfortunately people don't realize it's discouraged, or they sadly don't care.

State of Greyfriars Bobby with Greyfriars Bobby Bar behind it

Directly behind the statue of Greyfriars Bobby and near Greyfriars Kirkyard, you will find Greyfriars Bobby's Bar. This cozy, yet lively pub is a tribute to the history of Bobby and Edinburgh's love for him and his heartwarming story. The pub stays busy especially during the lunch hour but the staff is friendly and welcoming and the traditional Scottish fare is delicious.

A Walk Through Greyfriars Kirkyard

After visiting the statue, wander through the Greyfriars Kirkyard itself. It is one of the most famous graveyards in the world and is home to fascinating graves, ghost stories and is even the inspiration behind some of Harry Potter character names.

Look closely, and you will even find a small headstone for Bobby, placed near his master's grave; a fitting resting place for the city's most loyal companion.

A reminder of the bond we share with the animals we love

Greyfriars Bobby is more than just a sweet story, it is a reminder of the love and loyalty we share with the animals we love and who love us unconditionally.

So next time you're in Edinburgh, make it a point to say hello to the little loyal pup that waited.
