If you intend to make more than one journey using public transportation in London, it would be advantageous for you to think about utilizing an Oyster Card or contactless payment for financial reasons.
The Oyster card is a permanent reusable electronic ticket which can be reloaded. The Oyster card fare for any trip is the lowest fare available. For each day there is a fare cap (the most you can pay in one day on public transportation) and it's always less than a 1 day Travelcard. Note: Contactless card fares are the same as an Oyster card, so many people are moving away from using Oyster cards and are instead using contactless credit card as payment. You simply scan your contactless payment card at the ticket barriers just as you would an oyster card. Another option, is to use Apple Pay.
If you reside in London, the Oyster card is an excellent choice. However, if you are a tourist, the Visitor Oyster card is a preferred option compared to using your contactless payment method, as it could result in foreign exchange fees due to fares being converted from pounds to your local currency.
Aside from the Oyster Card, another alternative is the London Travelcard. Unlike the Oyster card's pay-as-you-go system, with the London Travelcard, you pay in advance for a ticket that grants you unlimited rides for a set number of days. Travelcards are available for durations of 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, or 1 year, for consecutive day use.
Keep in mind: The cost of your fare will differ based on the number of zones you expect to travel through; you will pay more for additional zones. London's transportation network is segmented into zones ranging from 1 to 9. The majority of hotels and tourist attractions are situated within zone 1. Most visitors typically only venture into the two central zones, 1 and 2. However, this only applies to the underground transportation, if you have a Travelcard for zones 1 and 2 you can travel in all zones on London's red buses.
The most convenient place to buy Travelcards for visitors are Underground stations, including the Heathrow airport. You can pay cash or credit.
Another thing to note is peak fares apply for any travel made Monday - Friday from 4:30 am - 9:30 am. All other travel is off-peak
Children under 11 travel free on the Underground, DLR, and buses. Children between 11-15 travel free on buses with an Oyster photocard.
Children's Travelcards are half the price of adult rates, but they need an Oyster 11-15 photocard to utilize the discounted rates
Currently London TravelCard Prices through March 2025
Zones | 1-day Travelcards | Travelcards valid at all times
Peak* | Off-peak | 7 Days | 1 Month | 1 Year
Zone 1-2 | n/a | n/a | £42.70 | £164.00 | £1708.00 |
Zone 1-3 | n/a | n/a | £50.20 | £192.80 | £2008.00 |
Zone 1-4 | £15.90 | £15.90 | £61.40 | £235.80 | £2456.00 |
Zone 1-5 | £22.60 | £15.90 | £73.00 | £280.40 | £2920.00 |
Zone 1-6 | £22.60 | £15.90 | £78.00 | £299.60 | £3120.00 |
The cost of the Oyster card is capped, making it potentially more economical than the Travelcard, depending on the duration of your travels. For single-day trips, the Oyster card is a more cost-effective option compared to buying a Travelcard. However, for extended periods of travel, the Travelcard may offer better value. In most cases, the Travelcard is pricier than the Oyster card or Contactless Payment card, except when making three or more journeys within a 7-day period.
Here is chart to better understand the price comparison between the Oyster Card and the Travelcard

Zone 1-6 | £15.60 | £22.60 | £15.90 | £78.00 |
