Costa Rica is by far one of my favorite places in the world and it is a dream come true for nature lovers and adventure seekers. With its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and abundant wildlife, this Central American paradise captures the heart of every traveler. While many flock to popular spots like Arenal Volcano and Tamarindo, there are hidden gems that offer unique experiences and authentic culture. Let’s explore five lesser-known destinations that highlight the diverse beauty of Costa Rica.
1. Nicoya Peninsula
The Nicoya Peninsula is a peaceful paradise known for its gorgeous beaches and relaxed vibe. Unlike its more touristy counterparts, Nicoya invites travelers to experience local life in its friendly towns. Enjoy the stunning beaches of Santa Teresa and Montezuma, which are popular spots for surfing and yoga.
If you love adventure and wildlife, don’t miss Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve. Here, you can trek through the trails where you are sure to spot a variety of monkey species, deer, and beautiful birds. After an unforgettable day, indulge in fresh seafood and local cuisine at one of the local beachfront restaurants. Did you know that Nicoya is part of one of the world's Blue Zones? This region has a high percentage of centenarians, with over 10% of its population living beyond 100 years.

2. Talamanca Mountains
Looking to escape the heat? The Talamanca Mountains are your destination. Known for their rich biodiversity, these mountains are a hiker and nature lovers paradise. There are countless trails that reveal breathtaking views of valleys and waterfalls, making each hike a rewarding experience.
La Amistad International Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site located here, teeming with diverse ecosystems. It covers over 202,000 acres and is home to approximately 400 species of birds, making it ideal for birdwatchers. Don’t forget to interact with the indigenous Bribri and Cabécar communities, who offer unique insights into their rich traditions and lifestyles.
3. Osa Peninsula
The Osa Peninsula is often called the most biodiverse area in the country. Corcovado National Park is located within the peninsula, which is home to 2.5% of the world's biodiversity and where visitors can immerse themselves in breathtaking nature and spot remarkable wildlife. From tapirs to monkeys and even elusive jaguars, the biodiversity here is truly amazing.
The park which was established in 1975 covers about 43,000 acres and protects significant portions of Costa Rica’s remaining primary rainforest. For underwater adventures, the area offers fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling spots. Expect to see vibrant coral reefs and marine creatures like turtles and colorful fish.

4. Tenorio Volcano National Park
If you enjoy hiking and stunning scenery, Tenorio Volcano National Park is a hidden treasure. Found in northern Costa Rica, this park features Río Celeste, famous for its striking turquoise waters, a result of volcanic minerals reacting with the river's natural elements.
The trails wind through lush forests, leading to the breathtaking waterfall that highlights the river's unique blue hue. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including howler monkeys and colorful bird species. Be sure to take your camera; the blues of Río Celeste are something you won't want to forget!

5. Cahuita National Park
Cahuita National Park, located on the southern Caribbean coast, blends lush rainforest with beautiful beaches. It is famous for its coral reefs, making it a hotspot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Here, you can explore vibrant marine life, like starfish and various fish species.
The park has several trails that allow visitors to journey through the rainforest, where you might spot sloths, raccoons, and different bird species. One of the highlights is the park's stunning white-sand beaches, where you can relax after your adventures. Don't miss the chance to taste traditional Caribbean food from local vendors nearby.
