Nestled in the breathtaking Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, The Whales Tail, or “La Cola de Ballena,” captivates the hearts of locals and travelers alike with its stunning beauty, natural wonders and abundance of marine and wildlife. Located in the small town of Uvita, the 270 acre Marino Ballena National Park is one of only two marine national parks in Costa Rica, and it's dedicated to conserving the rich marine ecosystem of the area including the mangroves, coral reefs, beaches and it is the exact spot that hundreds of humpback whales gather each year.
This unique coastal formation is more than just a beautiful sight; it offers an array of experiences for those eager to explore its stunning surroundings.

The Whales Tail is a stunning result of natural processes, shaped by ocean currents and tides over millions of years, converging currents deposit sand over rock formations to create what looks like a whale's tail. The tail is best viewed and explored during low tide, which reveals its full shape. Check the tides and time your visit when it is at the lowest so you have time to walk all the way out on the tip of the tail and can explore the tide pools and take in the surrounding beauty of the mountains and jungle that make Costa Rica so special and breathtaking. Bring your camera!
Remember to bring sunscreen as there is really no shade on this beach and pack sturdy water shoes because it is almost impossible to walk to the "tail" without good water shoes.
